St. Vincent itself is 18 miles long and 11 miles wide with the peak of La Soufière reaching over 4000 feet. The islands in The Grenadines are no more than a few miles each in length, some flat and some with steep hills. St. Vincent is 133 sq. miles whilst the whole of The Grenadines total only 16.6 sq. miles.

St. Vincent and The Grenadines has a population of approx. 112,000 (Jan 1998). African, East Indian, Portuguese, Carib and European heritages are present.

| Capital |
The Capital of St. Vincent is Kingstown. The primary settlement in Bequia is at Port Elizabeth, in Canouan at Charlestown Bay, in Mustique at Britannia Bay, and in Union Island at Clifton.

St. Vincent: Latitude - 13 degrees N, Longitude - 60 degrees W. The Grenadines stretch south of St.Vincent for 45 miles south-west to the northern tip of Grenada.

Atlantic Standard Time (4 hours behind Britain, 1 hour ahead of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard).

| Rainfall |
80 inches per annum in coastal areas, 150 inches per annum in the higher inland areas of St. Vincent. Rainy season is from July to October, driest period is between January and April.

| Temperature |
Mean monthly temperature: 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Centigrade), and varies only by 10 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees Centigrade) during the year. Sea temperature does not go below 79 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Centigrade). Hottest months are July and August.

| Government |
On October 27, 1979, St. Vincent and The Grenadines gained independence from Great Britain and now has a democratically elected government and Prime Minister. The Governor General is appointed by and represents the Crown.

220 Volts AC 50 cycles except for Petit St. Vincent that runs at 110V AC 60 cycles. Hotels usually have adaptors and transformers, but best to bring your own.

| Dress Code |
Casual. Dinner dining is often by the sea- it can become cool so a light jacket or a shawl is recommended. When hiking it is recommended that you take a waterproof, stout footwear and plenty of water.

Service charge of 10% often included in bills. Check for this - otherwise tipping left to your discretion.
